The Banana That Died

The banana of your grandparents was a different, tastier variety — wiped out by a fungus, and its replacement is now dying too.

The banana in your fruit bowl is a genetic dead end. It has no seeds, cannot breed, and is propagated only by cuttings, which means every Cavendish banana on earth is essentially a clone of every other — an immense global monoculture of identical plants. This makes the banana uniquely vulnerable, because a disease that can kill one plant can kill them all. It has happened before, within living memory. The banana your grandparents ate was a different and, by most accounts, superior variety, and it was driven to commercial extinction by a fungus. The unsettling truth is that the same thing is now happening again.

The reign of Gros Michel

Until the middle of the twentieth century, the banana that dominated world trade was a variety called Gros Michel — "Big Mike." It was, connoisseurs of the time insisted, richer, sweeter and more robust than what we eat today, with a thicker skin that made it easier to ship without bruising. Gros Michel built the modern banana industry and made the fruit a cheap, ubiquitous staple in Europe and North America, exported in enormous quantities from the plantations of Central America.

Its downfall was a soil-borne fungus that causes what is known as Panama disease, a form of Fusarium wilt. The fungus invades the plant's vascular system, strangling its ability to carry water, and it cannot be easily killed once it infests the soil. From the early twentieth century the disease spread through the plantations, and because every Gros Michel plant was genetically identical, none had any resistance. Growers tried abandoning infected land and clearing fresh jungle, but the fungus followed. By the 1950s and into the 1960s, Gros Michel had been rendered commercially unviable across the export trade — not literally extinct, but wiped out as a mass-market crop.

Enter the Cavendish

The industry was saved by a substitute: the Cavendish, a variety that happened to be resistant to the strain of Panama disease then ravaging Gros Michel. The Cavendish takes its name from William Cavendish, the sixth Duke of Devonshire, in whose greenhouses at Chatsworth the head gardener Joseph Paxton cultivated the plant in the 1830s. It was blander and more fragile than Gros Michel, requiring careful handling, but it was resistant, and resistance was everything. The industry retooled around it, and today the Cavendish accounts for the overwhelming majority — around ninety-nine per cent — of the bananas traded internationally. There is a lingering claim, impossible to verify, that artificial banana flavouring tastes "wrong" because it was calibrated to the lost Gros Michel; it makes a charming story, though flavour chemists are sceptical.

The banana's history is inseparable from politics, and it gave the language a phrase. The writer O. Henry coined the term "banana republic" in his 1904 book Cabbages and Kings, drawing on his time in Honduras, to describe a small, unstable country whose economy and government were dominated by the export of a single crop. The reality behind the phrase was the immense power of the American fruit companies — above all the United Fruit Company, later Chiquita — which controlled land, railways and ports across Central America and wielded political influence to match. The company's interests were entangled with coups and interventions in the region, most notoriously the 1954 overthrow of the government of Guatemala. The cheap banana was built on a system of concentrated corporate and political power that shaped whole nations.

Borrowed time, again

The lesson of Gros Michel was that a clonal monoculture is a slow-motion catastrophe waiting for the right pathogen. That pathogen has arrived. A new and more aggressive strain of Panama disease, known as Tropical Race 4, or TR4, attacks the Cavendish, which has no resistance to it. First identified in Asia, TR4 has spread through banana-growing regions across the world and has now reached Latin America, the heart of the export trade. Because the Cavendish is, like Gros Michel before it, a single genetically uniform variety planted across millions of acres, it is exposed to exactly the same danger that destroyed its predecessor.

Scientists are racing to respond — searching for resistant varieties, breeding new hybrids, and experimenting with gene editing to build resistance into the Cavendish itself. But there is no easy replacement waiting in the wings as the Cavendish once waited to replace Gros Michel, and the fruit's very sterility, which makes it seedless and pleasant to eat, also makes conventional breeding painfully slow.

The banana is a monument to the fragility of monoculture — a fruit so uniform, so convenient and so cheap that we built a global industry on a single clone, twice, and twice handed a fungus the keys to destroy it. The banana on the shelf tastes of an easy abundance. It is living, as it has before, on borrowed time.
