Darwin's Twenty-Year Delay

Darwin worked out natural selection, then sat on it for twenty years — until a letter from the tropics nearly scooped him.

In the summer of 1858 Charles Darwin, comfortably settled at Down House in the Kent countryside, opened a parcel that must have felt like a punch to the stomach. Inside was an essay from Alfred Russel Wallace, a naturalist collecting specimens in the Malay Archipelago, thousands of miles away. Wallace, feverish with malaria on the island of Ternate, had independently arrived at almost exactly the theory Darwin had been quietly nursing for two decades: that species change over time through the survival of those best suited to their environment. Wallace, unaware of the bombshell he had thrown, asked Darwin to pass the essay on for publication if he thought it worthwhile.

Darwin had first glimpsed the idea in the 1830s, in the years after his voyage on HMS Beagle. Between 1831 and 1836 the young naturalist had circled the globe, and his observations — especially in South America and on the Galapagos Islands — had planted a doubt that species were fixed and unchanging. The famous Galapagos finches, with their beaks suited to different food sources, became a textbook emblem of the idea, though Darwin's thinking actually crystallised only later, partly after the ornithologist John Gould pointed out that his island birds were distinct species. By 1838, after reading Thomas Malthus on population and the struggle for resources, Darwin had the mechanism: natural selection.

Why the long silence

So why did he wait twenty years to publish? Part of the answer is caution. Darwin knew his theory was explosive — it undercut the widely held belief that each species had been separately created by God — and he wanted his case to be unassailable. He wrote a short sketch of the theory in 1842 and a longer essay in 1844, then left them unpublished, even leaving instructions and money for his wife to publish the essay if he died. Instead of rushing to print, he spent eight years dissecting and classifying barnacles, establishing his credentials as a serious taxonomist. He was also, by temperament, an anxious and physically frail man who dreaded controversy.

Wallace's letter forced his hand. Darwin's friends, the geologist Charles Lyell and the botanist Joseph Hooker, engineered a diplomatic solution: on 1 July 1858 a joint presentation of Darwin's and Wallace's work was read to the Linnean Society of London, giving both men credit while establishing Darwin's priority through his earlier writings. Neither author was present — Wallace was still abroad, and Darwin was mourning his infant son, who had just died of scarlet fever. The reading caused barely a ripple; the society's president later remarked that the year had not been marked by any striking discoveries.

Origin at last

The real explosion came the following year. On 24 November 1859, Darwin published On the Origin of Species by Means of Natural Selection. The first print run sold out immediately — the entire stock was taken up by the book trade on the first day. Written for a general readership rather than as a technical treatise, it laid out the argument patiently and marshalled a mountain of evidence, and it changed biology permanently.

The reaction was fierce. At a now-legendary meeting in Oxford in 1860, the Bishop of Oxford, Samuel Wilberforce, is said to have asked the biologist Thomas Henry Huxley whether he was descended from an ape on his grandfather's or grandmother's side — and Huxley to have retorted that he would rather have an ape for an ancestor than a man who used his gifts to obscure the truth. The exact words are disputed, but the clash captured the storm. Huxley, who called himself "Darwin's bulldog," became the theory's most combative public champion, sparing the retiring Darwin the worst of the fight.

Wallace, for his part, never seemed to resent sharing the credit. He remained a generous admirer of the older man, later titling one of his own books simply Darwinism, and the two stayed on warm terms for the rest of their lives — a rare thing in a discipline littered with bitter priority disputes. That the theory is remembered as Darwin's owes much to the sheer weight of evidence he had spent two decades assembling.

Darwin never fully resolved every puzzle — he had no idea how traits were inherited, the answer to which lay in Gregor Mendel's then-obscure pea experiments — and he later confessed that the sudden appearance of flowering plants in the fossil record was "an abominable mystery." But the central idea held. The twenty-year delay, so often cast as timidity, gave the world a book so thoroughly argued that it withstood the onslaught it provoked.
