The Fosbury Flop

He went over the bar backwards, and the crowd laughed — until physics quietly declared him right.

When Dick Fosbury cleared a high-jump bar, spectators saw a man apparently falling upstairs: a curved sprint, a twist, and then a body sailing over head-first, face to the sky, landing flat on its back. Sportswriters reached for insults that doubled as descriptions — a fish flopping in a boat, an airborne seizure, "the world's laziest high jumper". A local paper's "Fosbury flops over the bar" caption gave the technique its name, and Fosbury, who had a wry engineer's temperament, kept it. At the Mexico City Olympics of 1968, the laughing stopped at 2.24 metres — an Olympic record, a gold medal, and the beginning of the only complete technique revolution any major athletics event has ever undergone.

Fosbury came to the idea not as a theorist but as a struggling teenager. At school in Medford, Oregon, in 1963, he could barely clear five feet with the era's orthodox techniques — the straddle, in which the jumper rolls face-down along the bar, and the older scissors. In competition, out of desperation, the sixteen-year-old began leaning back in his scissors jump, lifting his hips, and letting his shoulders go over first. His marks improved instantly, and over several seasons of self-experiment the style evolved into its final form: a curved, accelerating approach that generates rotation, take-off from the outside foot, an arched back over the bar, and a landing on the shoulders. Coaches tried repeatedly to convert him back to the straddle. The results kept refusing to cooperate, and at Oregon State University — where he studied civil engineering, pleasingly — his coach finally surrendered to the data.

The physics of falling upwards

The flop wins for a reason that delights physicists: a flopper's centre of mass can pass underneath the bar while the body, arched and draped over it one segment at a time, goes over the top. A jumper clearing 2.20 metres by flop may need to raise their centre of mass measurably less than a straddler clearing the same height — free centimetres, paid for in nothing but nerve. The technique also swaps the straddle's precise, strength-heavy lead-leg mechanics for speed and curve-running that ordinary athletes can learn quickly. But the flop had a hidden prerequisite, and it explains why nobody invented it sooner: you land on your neck and shoulders. Until the mid-1960s, high jumpers came down into pits of sand, sawdust or wood shavings, where a flop landing meant injury. The arrival of deep foam matting in schools and stadiums immediately before Fosbury's experiments was the enabling technology. The flop is a textbook case — cited in engineering lectures ever since — of an innovation waiting not for a genius, but for a mattress.

In Mexico City — the thin-aired Games at 2,240 metres altitude that also produced Bob Beamon's outlandish 8.90-metre long jump — Fosbury cleared every height up to 2.22 metres without a miss and took gold at 2.24 on his third attempt, beating his American teammate Ed Caruthers. Curiously, the revolutionary never held the world record: that still belonged to the great Soviet straddler Valeriy Brumel and, later, other conventional jumpers. Fosbury himself, having changed the sport forever, failed to qualify for the 1972 Olympics and returned to engineering.

The takeover

The revolution proceeded at the speed of a generation. At Munich 1972, twenty-eight of the forty men in the Olympic competition flopped, and the women's gold was won with the new technique by West Germany's Ulrike Meyfarth, aged just sixteen. The straddle produced its last world record in 1978, through the Soviet Vladimir Yashchenko; virtually every serious jumper since has flopped, and every world record since then has been set by the technique — including the current men's mark of 2.45 metres, set by Cuba's Javier Sotomayor in 1993, and every Olympic champion of either sex for decades. It is close to unique in sport: not an improvement within an orthodoxy, but the wholesale replacement of one by a teenager's heresy. Fosbury became an emblem for innovation far beyond athletics — business schools teach him — and remained, until his death in 2023, gently amused that his contribution to human achievement was working out how to fall over a stick backwards. The lesson he liked best was the simplest: everyone had watched jumpers land in foam for years, and only one person asked what the foam now made possible.
