The airship that nosed towards Lakehurst, New Jersey, on the stormy evening of 6 May 1937 was the largest flying machine ever built: LZ 129 Hindenburg, 245 metres from bow to tail — three times the length of a modern jumbo jet — kept aloft by seven million cubic feet of hydrogen. It had crossed the Atlantic from Frankfurt in style: a dining room with aluminium furniture, promenade windows that opened in flight, and — astonishingly for a hydrogen ship — a pressurised smoking room with a single electric lighter. Its 1936 season had even featured a lounge with a lightweight baby grand piano, since removed to save weight. The ship had already completed a triumphant first season in 1936, making ten round trips to the United States and more to Brazil, and this was the opening crossing of an expanded 1937 schedule. Thunderstorms had delayed the landing for hours; Captain Max Pruss circled until the weather eased. As ground crew took the landing lines, flame flickered near the tail. In roughly half a minute — most estimates say 32 to 37 seconds — the ship was a skeleton of burning girders on the ground.
The miracle inside the catastrophe is the survival rate. Of the 97 people aboard, 62 lived. The dead numbered 36: thirteen passengers, twenty-two crew, and one member of the ground crew. Hydrogen burns upward, and the ship sank relatively slowly; many aboard jumped clear or rode the falling bow to the ground. The fourteen-year-old cabin boy, Werner Franz, survived because a water ballast tank burst over him, soaking his clothes as he escaped through a hatch.
"Oh, the humanity"
The disaster is inseparable from its soundtrack, and the soundtrack is routinely misremembered. Herbert Morrison, a radio reporter from Chicago station WLS, was at Lakehurst recording a routine arrival for later broadcast — not transmitting live. As the ship burned he sobbed into the disc recorder the words that became shorthand for broadcast horror: "It's burst into flames... oh, the humanity!" His recording aired the next day, and NBC broke its own rule against playing recorded material on network news. Just as decisive were the newsreel cameras: unlike earlier airship losses, this one died on film, in front of the world's press, and the footage killed public faith in the technology within days.
The deeper cause was geopolitical. The Hindenburg had been designed for helium, the inert lifting gas, but the United States held a near-monopoly on it and had banned exports under the Helium Act of 1925 — a ban Congress had no appetite to relax for Hitler's Germany. So the Zeppelin company reverted to flammable hydrogen, whose dangers it believed decades of careful practice had tamed: the Graf Zeppelin had flown over a million miles, including a celebrated 1929 round-the-world flight, without a passenger fatality. The Hindenburg itself was a Nazi showpiece, swastikas on its tail fins, sent to drop leaflets during plebiscite campaigns and to cruise over the 1936 Berlin Olympics — much to the disgust of the Zeppelin company's veteran chief Hugo Eckener, an outspoken critic of the regime whom Goebbels tried to erase from the press. A one-way transatlantic ticket cost around $400 — a small fortune in the Depression — for a crossing of about two and a half days, twice the speed of an ocean liner.
What lit it
Investigations on both sides of the Atlantic settled on a prosaic verdict: leaking hydrogen, probably from a ruptured cell or valve, ignited by an electrostatic discharge as the ship, electrically charged from the stormy air, dropped its landing lines and earthed itself. Sabotage theories — a bomb, a disgruntled crewman, an anti-Nazi gesture — have never produced evidence, though they filled books for decades. The later "incendiary paint" theory, which blamed the doped outer skin rather than the hydrogen, enjoyed television popularity but has been rejected by most engineers who have examined it: the skin alone cannot account for a fire that consumed the ship in half a minute. What is certain is the consequence. The Graf Zeppelin landed from its final South American run and never carried passengers again; its successor LZ 130 was barred from passenger service and eventually scrapped, with Göring melting the airframes for aircraft aluminium in 1940. The age of the great passenger airships — the only aircraft ever to offer cabins, dining salons and a piano across an ocean — ended in the time it takes to read this paragraph aloud.
