No one climbed the world's highest mountain to find out how tall it was. Its height was calculated, sometime around 1852, by a mathematician sitting at a desk in the plains of India, more than 150 miles from the peak itself, armed with nothing but columns of survey figures and trigonometry. The story goes that this "computer" — for that was the job title, a person who computes — burst into the office of his superior to announce he had discovered the highest mountain in the world. Like many neat anecdotes in the history of science it may be embroidered, but the underlying feat was real, and it was one of the great triumphs of nineteenth-century measurement.
The project behind it was the Great Trigonometrical Survey of India, begun in 1802 and pursued across the subcontinent for decades. Its method was triangulation: starting from one very carefully measured baseline, surveyors used theodolites — precision instruments for measuring angles — to build up a vast, interlocking web of triangles across the land. Once you know the length of one side and the angles, trigonometry gives you every other distance. Extended peak by peak toward the Himalaya, the survey could fix the position and height of mountains its members never set foot on. It was gruelling, dangerous work: the great theodolites weighed half a tonne and needed a dozen men to carry, and surveyors died in numbers from malaria and the hardships of the field. The survey's most celebrated instrument, the measurement of an arc of the meridian running the length of India, took the better part of half a century to complete.
Peak XV
The Himalayan peaks were measured from stations on the plains, dozens of miles away, correcting painstakingly for the curvature of the Earth and even for the way the atmosphere bends light. The mathematical work of reducing these observations fell to the survey's Indian computers, most famously Radhanath Sikdar, a Bengali mathematician who joined the survey in the 1830s. It was Sikdar, according to the accepted account, who first calculated that an undistinguished summit catalogued only as "Peak XV" was in fact taller than any other yet measured.
The figure his calculations produced, announced in 1856, was 29,002 feet. And here lies one of the survey's most enduring legends. The story often told is that the true computed height came out at exactly 29,000 feet — but that the surveyors feared such a perfectly round number would look like a lazy estimate rather than a precise measurement, and so added two symbolic feet to make it look properly scientific. It is a lovely tale, and it may well be true, but it is best treated as a well-worn anecdote rather than documented fact.
The mountain needed a name. Local peoples had their own — in Tibetan it was known as Chomolungma, often rendered as "Goddess Mother of the World". But the survey, unaware of or disregarding local usage, named it after Sir George Everest, the Welsh-born Surveyor General who had led the Great Trigonometrical Survey for much of its most ambitious phase. Everest himself objected, partly on the grounds that his name could not easily be written or pronounced in the languages of the region. He was overruled. The name stuck — and, as a further irony, is usually mispronounced: the man himself said his surname "EEV-rest", not "EV-er-est".
Why the number keeps changing
The 1856 figure was a remarkable achievement, but it was not the last word, because a mountain's height is a slipperier thing than it sounds. It depends on where you decide "sea level" is beneath a landmass thousands of miles from the sea, on how much snow and ice sits on the summit, and on the slow grinding of the Indian tectonic plate into Asia, which is still pushing the Himalaya upward by a few millimetres a year. Later surveys, using aircraft, ground-based instruments and eventually satellite positioning, produced revised figures. The commonly cited modern height is around 8,849 metres, roughly 29,032 feet — and a joint Nepali-Chinese survey re-measured it as recently as 2020, after a major earthquake prompted questions about whether the peak had shifted.
So the tallest thing on Earth has been weighed and re-weighed for nearly two centuries, its precise figure forever a little provisional. It remains a striking thought that the mountain was known to be the highest in the world long before anyone stood on it — its supremacy established not by a climber's boot but by a mathematician's pencil.
