The Phaistos Disc

A Bronze Age clay disc stamped with 241 symbols — the world's oldest printed text, and still nobody can read it.

On 3 July 1908, in the ruins of a Minoan palace at Phaistos in southern Crete, the Italian archaeologist Luigi Pernier lifted a small disc of fired clay from a basement chamber, found amid ash, black earth and burnt ox bone. It was about sixteen centimetres across — the size of a dessert plate — and both faces were covered in a spiral of crisp little pictures: a man walking, a crested head, a fish, a shield, a flower. Pernier had found what many now call the world's first printed document. More than a century later, nobody can read a word of it.

The Phaistos Disc carries 241 sign impressions (some tallies say 242, thanks to a damaged spot), drawn from an inventory of 45 distinct signs, arranged in a spiral on each side and divided by incised lines into 61 groups that are usually assumed to be words. What makes the object technologically astonishing is how the signs got there. They were not drawn freehand: each was stamped into the wet clay with a pre-made punch, one per sign, like a typographer's sorts pressed into a page. Whoever made the disc owned a reusable set of 45 character stamps — the conceptual seed of movable type, more than three thousand years before Gutenberg's press in the 1450s. That is also part of the puzzle: making a stamp set implies you intend to print many documents, yet the disc is essentially unique. Only a handful of possibly related marks exist, most famously on the Arkalochori Axe, a bronze votive axe from a Cretan cave.

The disc is generally dated to the Minoan Bronze Age, around 1700 BC on the common estimate, though because it was dated by the pottery found near it, scholars have argued for dates spanning several centuries of the second millennium BC. Even the reading order is contested, although most specialists conclude from the way signs were stamped and crowded that the text runs from the rim spiralling inward, read right to left.

An alphabet soup of Cretan scripts

Bronze Age Crete was improbably rich in writing systems, and keeping them straight is prime quiz territory. Cretan hieroglyphic, the earliest, is undeciphered. Linear A, the script of the Minoan palaces, is also undeciphered — we can pronounce many of its signs but cannot understand the language beneath. Linear B, adapted later to write Mycenaean Greek, was famously cracked in 1952 by the English architect Michael Ventris, in one of the twentieth century's great intellectual feats. The Phaistos Disc matches none of them exactly, though a few signs resemble Linear A's. If its 45 signs form a syllabary, as their number suggests, the underlying language is probably Minoan — which would mean that even a perfect phonetic decipherment might yield sounds nobody can translate.

That has not deterred the decipherers. Claimed solutions arrive with metronomic regularity and have read the disc as a prayer to a mother goddess, a hymn, a calendar, a court list, a board game and even a geometric theorem, in languages from Greek to Luwian to Basque. All fail the same test: with only 241 signs and no bilingual crib — no Rosetta Stone — there are too few constraints to prove any reading right. Most scholars accept a bleak arithmetic: unless more examples of the script are dug up, the disc will very likely never be convincingly deciphered.

The forgery heresy

There is a twist beloved of quizmasters. In 2008 the American art dealer and antiquities scholar Jerome Eisenberg argued the disc is a modern forgery, cooked up by Pernier himself out of envy of Arthur Evans's spectacular finds at Knossos and the discoveries of rival excavators. Eisenberg pointed, among other things, to the disc's suspiciously neat firing — most Minoan tablets were unbaked and only hardened by accidental fires. A thermoluminescence test could estimate when the clay was fired, but the Heraklion Archaeological Museum, where the disc is the star exhibit, has declined to subject its fragile treasure to sampling, and the mainstream of Aegean archaeology continues to treat the disc as genuine. So even the artefact's authenticity retains a whisper of mystery — though it is fair to say the forgery theory remains a minority pursuit.

And so the disc sits in its case in Heraklion: a one-off print run from a press that vanished, in a script used nowhere else, in a language nobody can name. It has become the emblem of undeciphered writing itself, reproduced on Cretan jewellery and paperbacks and puzzle books, admired by millions who cannot read it — 45 characters still in search of an author.
