A Sea Without Shores

The only sea on Earth with no coastline — bounded by currents, ruled by drifting weed, and the place every eel goes to breed.

Every sea on Earth is defined by the land that hems it in — except one. The Sargasso Sea, a vast oval of warm, deep-blue water in the middle of the North Atlantic, has no coastline at all. Its boundaries are not beaches but currents: the Gulf Stream to the west, the North Atlantic Current to the north, the Canary Current to the east and the North Atlantic Equatorial Current to the south. Together these form the clockwise swirl of the North Atlantic Gyre, and the calm water they enclose is the Sargasso — the only sea on the planet with no shore.

It takes its name from sargassum, the golden-brown seaweed that floats across its surface in rafts and windrows. Unlike most seaweed, sargassum lives its whole life adrift, never anchored to the seabed, buoyed by tiny gas-filled bladders. To sailors it looked like a meadow at sea, and it fed centuries of legend. Christopher Columbus and his crews passed through the weed on the 1492 crossing and noted it in the ships' logs; later stories inflated the seaweed into a trap that could ensnare vessels and hold them until their crews starved. The Sargasso became a fixture of maritime myth — a graveyard of becalmed ships — and much of it overlaps the region popularly called the Bermuda Triangle. The becalming was real enough: the gyre's light, fickle winds could strand sailing ships for days. The seaweed swallowing whole vessels was not.

The mystery of the eels

The Sargasso's strangest secret has nothing to do with lost ships. It concerns eels. For centuries no one could work out where the common European eel came from. Aristotle thought eels arose spontaneously from mud; others imagined they emerged from morning dew. Adult eels were everywhere in Europe's rivers, yet no one ever found their eggs, and no one could say where the young began.

The trail was picked up by the Danish biologist Johannes Schmidt, who spent the years around the First World War crossing the Atlantic, netting ever-smaller eel larvae. The smallest of all, he found, clustered in the Sargasso Sea. From this he concluded, in work published in the 1920s, that both the European eel and its American cousin swim thousands of kilometres across the ocean to breed in the Sargasso — and that the transparent, leaf-shaped larvae then drift back on the currents to the rivers of two continents. It was one of the great detective stories of natural history.

And yet a stubborn gap remained. In the century since Schmidt, no one had ever directly observed a European eel spawning, nor even confirmed that a tagged adult reached the Sargasso. The spawning grounds were an inference, drawn from where the smallest larvae turned up. Only in 2022 did scientists close part of the loop: a team fitted adult eels with satellite tags and tracked individuals all the way to the edge of the Sargasso, published as the first direct evidence that the eels really do complete the journey. The act of spawning itself, in the deep dark of the open sea, has still never been witnessed.

The eels themselves are now in trouble. Numbers of young European eels arriving in the continent's rivers collapsed over recent decades, and the species is listed as critically endangered, threatened by dams, pollution and the loss of the wetlands strung along its extraordinary migration. That makes the Sargasso not just a curiosity but a conservation concern: protect the breeding ground and you protect a creature whose life cycle spans an entire ocean. In 2014 several governments signed the Hamilton Declaration, a voluntary agreement to cooperate on safeguarding the Sargasso, and a small commission was set up to champion a sea that no country owns.

A living, shifting place

The Sargasso is not the lifeless desert of legend. Its floating weed is a nursery and a refuge — young sea turtles shelter in it, and creatures such as the sargassum fish live nowhere else, camouflaged perfectly against the fronds. Because it sits at the still centre of the gyre, though, the Sargasso also gathers whatever the ocean carries: this is a place where drifting plastic accumulates, a marine crossroads that concentrates both life and litter.

The sea's very intangibility makes it hard to protect. It lies largely beyond any single nation's waters, a shoreless expanse belonging to no one, and its conservation depends on international cooperation rather than a coastguard. For a body of water with no coast, no fixed edges and a resident cast that includes creatures found nowhere else on Earth, that may be fitting. The Sargasso is the sea that proves the rule — bounded not by land but by the restless motion of the ocean itself.
