The Trans-Siberian Railway

Nine thousand kilometres, seven time zones — and one winter when trains crossed the world's deepest lake on ice.

At the end of the platform at Vladivostok station stands a monument shaped like a kilometre post. It reads 9288 — the official count of kilometres back to Yaroslavsky station in Moscow, a figure quibbled over by a kilometre or so ever since. The Trans-Siberian is the longest railway line in the world by a comfortable margin: a single route spanning eight time zones and nearly a third of the way around the planet. For more than a century its timetables and station clocks ran on Moscow time along the entire length, so that a traveller arriving in Vladivostok at what the platform clock insisted was mid-morning stepped out into the evening. It is less a railway than a national circulatory system — and it was built in a hurry, by a state that feared what would happen if it waited.

In the 1880s Siberia was an ocean of land: furs, grain and minerals with no way out, and a Pacific coast reachable from the capital only by months of travel. Britain's reach in Asia and a rapidly modernising Japan made that empty eastern flank look dangerous. In 1891 Tsar Alexander III ordered a continuous railway across Siberia, and his heir — the future Nicholas II — ceremonially inaugurated the works at Vladivostok that May, tipping the first barrow of earth. The project's true engine, though, was Sergei Witte, the formidable finance minister, who raised colossal sums, much of it French loan capital, and drove construction from both ends at once.

The land fought back. The workforce — peasant migrants, drafted soldiers, hired labourers and thousands of convicts and exiles earning reduced sentences — worked largely with hand tools, through summers thick with mosquitoes and winters of minus forty. Builders in the east hit permafrost; rivers swept away embankments. To keep the pace, engineers built cheap: light rails, steep gradients, timber bridges and a single track, much of it rebuilt more solidly within two decades. Even so, the speed was astonishing for the age — on average, roughly 500 kilometres of new line a year across a wilderness the size of a continent.

The Baikal problem

Halfway along, the line met Lake Baikal: the deepest lake on Earth, a mountain-walled crescent holding roughly a fifth of the planet's unfrozen fresh water. Rather than blast a shoreline route at once, the state ordered a train ferry. The icebreaker SS Baikal was built by Armstrong Whitworth on the Tyne, shipped east in thousands of pieces and riveted back together on the lakeshore; from 1900 it carried entire trains across the water. The arrangement failed exactly when it mattered most. In the savage winter of early 1904, with the Russo-Japanese War erupting, ice defeated even the icebreaker — so engineers laid rails directly across the frozen lake. Locomotives were too heavy for the ice and crossed in pieces; the carriages were hauled over by horses. The permanent answer, the Circum-Baikal loop along the southern cliffs, opened later that year: some 80 kilometres threaded through dozens of tunnels and galleries, so costly and intricate that it was called the golden buckle on the steel belt of Russia.

The war the railway was meant to deter duly exposed its limits: a single track, a ferry bottleneck, and a shortcut that crossed foreign soil — the original route reached Vladivostok via the Chinese Eastern Railway across Manchuria, shorter but hostage to events in China. After 1905 Russia built the Amur line entirely on its own territory, and when the bridge over the Amur at Khabarovsk — at roughly 2.6 kilometres, then the longest in the empire — opened in 1916, the Trans-Siberian at last ran from Moscow to the Pacific wholly on Russian soil. The whole enterprise had taken a quarter of a century.

The consequences outgrew the strategy. Subsidised fares in special emigrant carriages carried millions of peasant settlers east in the two decades after building began, and villages along the line swelled into cities — none faster than Novosibirsk, which began as a bridge-builders' camp and became the largest city in Siberia. The line still runs on Russia's broad 1,520-millimetre gauge, and the full run from Moscow still takes about a week, the samovar at the end of each carriage bubbling through all eight time zones. Other countries measure themselves in anthems and constitutions; Russia can measure itself in track — nine thousand kilometres of it, from one sea to the edge of another.
