The Algorithm That Ate Pop

Oil-prospecting maths, Cher's Believe and T-Pain's robot croon — how Auto-Tune accidentally became pop's default voice.

The tool that changed the sound of the human voice more than any invention since the microphone began as oil-prospecting mathematics. Andy Hildebrand was a research engineer in the seismic industry, using a technique called autocorrelation to interpret sound waves bounced through the earth's crust in the hunt for oil deposits. At a dinner party — so runs his oft-told origin story — a guest challenged him to invent a box that would make her sing in tune. He realised the same mathematics that located oil in reflected signals could locate the pitch of a voice, and shift it. In 1997 his company, Antares Audio Technologies, released the result: Auto-Tune, software that nudges off-key notes to the nearest true pitch. It was meant to be inaudible — a discreet corrector of small human errors. Its conquest of pop began the moment somebody turned it up to be as audible as possible.

That somebody was the production team behind Cher's 1998 single "Believe". Auto-Tune has a setting — retune speed — governing how fast a note is dragged to the correct pitch; set gently, it hides. Set to maximum, at zero, it snaps the voice instantly between notes, stripping out natural slides and producing a glittering, robotic warble. On "Believe", the effect became the hook. The record went to number one in more than twenty countries, and for a while the producers protected their discovery by claiming in interviews that it had been done with a vocoder — a decoy so effective that the extreme setting is still sometimes called "the Cher effect".

The T-Pain era

If Cher demonstrated the trick, the Florida singer T-Pain industrialised it. From 2005 he built an entire, hugely successful catalogue — "Buy U a Drank", "Bartender", endless guest hooks — on hard-tuned vocals used not as correction but as an instrument, a melancholy cyborg croon. Imitators followed until the sound saturated hip-hop and R&B: Lil Wayne adopted it, Kanye West built 808s & Heartbreak around it, and its ubiquity finally provoked a formal declaration of war — Jay-Z's 2009 single "D.O.A. (Death of Auto-Tune)". The obituary was premature. The following decade's dominant melodic rap — Future, Travis Scott and their generation — treated tuned vocals as the genre's default texture, and T-Pain enjoyed a late vindication: his unprocessed voice, showcased on a stripped-down Tiny Desk session and a televised singing-competition win, revealed that the man behind the robot could, in fact, really sing. The effect had been an aesthetic all along, not a crutch — a point he underlined by licensing an official "I Am T-Pain" smartphone app so that anyone could warble through his signature sound for a couple of dollars.

Meanwhile the invisible version of Auto-Tune quietly won a larger war. Pitch correction — Antares' product or rivals like Melodyne — became a standard stage of vocal production across essentially all commercial pop, applied so routinely that its absence, not its presence, is the anomaly. Live performances use real-time correction; talent-show broadcasts have faced recurring questions about it, and the technology has crept into genres — country, indie, even musical theatre cast recordings — that publicly disdain it. The practice is the modern chapter of an old story — studios have always polished takes, from splicing tape to comping the best of thirty vocal passes — but Auto-Tune made the polish algorithmic, instant and universal.

The argument it started

The backlash has been constant and revealing. Time magazine listed Auto-Tune among the fifty worst inventions; purists hear in it the death of craft, and the debate rehearses, almost word for word, earlier panics about the synthesizer, the drum machine and the electric guitar. The counter-argument is that every generation's cheating is the next generation's instrument: nobody now accuses a guitarist of fraud for using distortion, which is, after all, a machine falsifying the true sound of the strings. What Auto-Tune undeniably changed is the ear of the audience itself — listeners raised on quantised pitch can find unprocessed voices strangely naked, even out of tune, and singers increasingly write melodies designed for the effect's glassy leaps.

Hildebrand, for his part, has always seemed amused by his notoriety, pointing out that his software has no morality setting: it does what the fader says. The seismologist who set out to find oil found, instead, the fault line running through modern pop — the question of what a "real" voice is — and put a knob on it.
