In an Oxford laboratory in 2002, a New Caledonian crow named Betty was presented with a small problem. A tasty morsel sat in a little bucket at the bottom of a vertical tube, out of reach of her beak. Nearby lay two pieces of wire: one bent into a hook, one straight. The obvious solution was the hook, but on this occasion a fellow crow made off with it, leaving Betty only the useless straight wire. What she did next made headlines around the world. She wedged the straight wire against the base of the apparatus, bent it into a hook with her beak, and used her newly made tool to lift the bucket out. Nobody had shown her how.
The toolmakers of New Caledonia
Betty was not a random clever bird; she belonged to a species that has become the great celebrity of animal cognition. New Caledonian crows, native to a Pacific island group east of Australia, are among the very few animals known to make and use tools in the wild as a matter of routine. They fashion hooked twigs to winkle grubs out of crevices and cut precisely shaped, barbed tools from the stiff edges of pandanus leaves — and they do so with a consistency and refinement that had, before them, been documented mainly in chimpanzees and humans.
The broader family, the corvids — crows, ravens, rooks, jackdaws, magpies and jays — are collectively among the most intelligent animals on the planet, rivalling great apes on many cognitive tests despite brains a fraction of the size, packed with neurons at high density. In laboratory experiments corvids have solved multi-step puzzles, used one tool to obtain another, and dropped stones into a water-filled tube to raise the level and float a floating reward within reach — a feat straight out of one of Aesop's fables, in which a thirsty crow does precisely that.
They remember your face
Perhaps the most unsettling demonstration of corvid intelligence came not from tools but from grudges. Researchers at the University of Washington, led by John Marzluff, wore distinctive masks while trapping and banding wild American crows — an experience the birds found threatening but harmless. Afterwards, crows across the campus scolded and mobbed anyone wearing that particular "dangerous" mask, while ignoring people in other masks. The birds had learned to recognise a specific human face and associate it with danger. More remarkably, the hostility spread to crows that had never been trapped and persisted for years, passed along through the local crow population — evidence that the knowledge was being socially transmitted, one bird learning from the alarm of another. Crows, in short, can hold a grudge against a specific person, and teach their neighbours to hold it too.
This combines with other findings into a portrait of genuine sophistication. Some corvids cache food and, crucially, will re-hide it if they were watched while caching — implying they grasp that another bird has seen the hiding place and might steal it, a glimmer of understanding another mind's perspective. Ravens have been shown to plan for future events, selecting and saving a tool to use later, a capacity once thought uniquely human and ape-like.
How did brains this capable evolve on such a different branch of the tree of life? Birds descend from dinosaurs, and their last common ancestor with mammals lived hundreds of millions of years ago. Bird brains are built on a different plan from ours, without the layered neocortex that mammals use for higher cognition — yet corvids arrive at comparable intelligence by another architecture entirely. Like the octopus in the sea, the crow is a reminder that clever minds have evolved more than once, by more than one route, and that intelligence is not the private property of the primate line.
So the next time a crow watches you from a lamp-post with that flat, appraising stare, it is worth remembering Betty and her wire, and the campus crows and their masks. The bird may be solving a problem you have not noticed, remembering a face you have forgotten, or filing you away for future reference. Some people who feed crows regularly report being brought small gifts in return — buttons, bottle caps, bits of glass — as if the birds were keeping their own accounts. It would be unwise to give one a reason to remember you badly.
