The Rosetta Stone

A broken slab dug up by Napoleon's soldiers held the key to 3,000 years of silent hieroglyphs.

In July 1799, French soldiers strengthening the walls of a fort near the Egyptian port town of Rashid — Rosetta to Europeans — pried loose a slab of dark stone covered in carved writing. The officer on site, an engineer named Pierre-François Bouchard, noticed something extraordinary: the stone carried three different scripts. At the top, Egyptian hieroglyphs, which no living person could read and hadn't been read for well over a thousand years. In the middle, a flowing cursive script, later identified as Demotic, the everyday writing of ancient Egypt. And at the bottom, ancient Greek — which scholars could read perfectly well.

The implication hit immediately. If all three texts said the same thing, the Greek could unlock the other two, and with them the entire written record of pharaonic Egypt: temple walls, tombs, papyri, three thousand years of silence. Napoleon's expedition to Egypt had brought along a small army of scholars and scientists precisely to study the country, and the find electrified them. Copies of the inscriptions were made by inking the stone and pressing paper against it, and these were dispatched to scholars across Europe.

The stone itself never made it to Paris. When the British defeated the French in Egypt, the terms of surrender in 1801 gave Britain the antiquities the French had collected. The Rosetta Stone arrived in England in 1802 and entered the British Museum, where it has remained ever since — it is often described as the museum's most visited object. Painted labels on its sides long recorded its capture: 'Captured in Egypt by the British Army.'

What the stone actually says

For an object of such consequence, the text is gloriously mundane. It is a decree issued at Memphis in 196 BC by a council of Egyptian priests, honouring the young pharaoh Ptolemy V Epiphanes — a teenage king of the Greek-speaking dynasty founded by one of Alexander the Great's generals. The decree thanks Ptolemy for tax concessions and gifts to the temples, and orders that copies be set up in temples across Egypt in the three scripts of the land: hieroglyphs (the sacred script), Demotic (the people's script) and Greek (the language of the ruling class). The Rosetta Stone is simply the copy that happened to survive and be found first; fragments of other copies of the same decree were discovered later, helping fill in the badly damaged hieroglyphic section at the top.

The duel of the decipherers

Cracking the code took over two decades and became a rivalry between two brilliant men. Thomas Young, the English polymath who also did foundational work on the wave theory of light, made crucial early progress in the 1810s. He worked out that the ovals in the hieroglyphic text — called cartouches — enclosed royal names, and that the signs spelling 'Ptolemy' had phonetic values, sound by sound. But Young remained half-committed to the old assumption that hieroglyphs were mostly symbolic pictures, and his advance stalled.

The breakthrough belonged to Jean-François Champollion, a young French prodigy who had been obsessed with Egypt since childhood and had armed himself with a decisive weapon: fluency in Coptic, the last descendant of the ancient Egyptian language, preserved in Egyptian Christian liturgy. Comparing the Ptolemy cartouche with the name Cleopatra on an obelisk brought to England from Philae, and then testing his phonetic alphabet against cartouches copied from the temple of Abu Simbel, Champollion realised the system's true nature: hieroglyphs were a rich mixture of phonetic signs and meaning signs, and behind them lay a real language he could reach through Coptic. When the Abu Simbel cartouche yielded the name Ramesses, he reportedly ran to his brother's office, cried 'Je tiens l'affaire!' — 'I've got it!' — and collapsed. In September 1822 he announced his system in his famous Lettre à M. Dacier, the founding document of Egyptology.

What followed was a scholarly big bang. Within decades, Egypt's king lists, religious texts, tax records, love poems and medical papyri were speaking again. The stone that started it became shorthand for any decryption key — from the language-learning software named after it to the European Space Agency's Rosetta comet probe, whose lander, Philae, was named for the obelisk that supplied Cleopatra's cartouche.

The stone itself is a stele of granodiorite, a hard grey-pink igneous rock, about 112 centimetres tall in its broken state, its top and right side lost. Egypt has repeatedly called for its return, making it one of the most prominent objects in the wider debate about antiquities taken during the colonial era. Meanwhile it sits in London behind glass, a bureaucratic thank-you note from forgotten priests that became, by accident of survival, one of the most important objects ever pulled from the ground.
