When the Sahara Was Green

Cave paintings of swimmers and hippo bones under the dunes — the world's greatest desert was a savannah within human memory.

In 1933, deep in the Gilf Kebir plateau of Egypt's far south-west — one of the driest places on Earth, where rain may not fall for decades — the Hungarian desert explorer László Almásy crawled into a rock shelter and found paintings of people swimming. Little arched figures float and dive across the stone, arms outstretched, painted by artists who must have watched real swimmers in real water. Almásy, later fictionalised as the doomed hero of The English Patient, argued the obvious and, at the time, scandalous conclusion: the Sahara had once been wet.

He was right. The evidence has since turned up everywhere under and around the world's largest hot desert. The Tassili n'Ajjer plateau in Algeria holds thousands of rock paintings and engravings of hippos, crocodiles, elephants, giraffes and great herds of cattle driven by herders. Excavations across the desert have produced fish bones, harpoon points and hippo remains hundreds of kilometres from any modern river. At Gobero in Niger, archaeologists found a lakeside cemetery used across several millennia by two successive peoples — first tall fisher-hunters, later slighter cattle herders — separated in the record by a centuries-long gap when the lake dried and the site was abandoned; their dead were buried with harpoons, fish-hooks and shell ornaments. And satellite images reveal the ghost shorelines of Lake Mega-Chad, which at its greatest extent spread across roughly 360,000 square kilometres — comparable to today's Caspian Sea — where modern Lake Chad is a shallow remnant. Radar peering beneath the sand traces fossil river systems threading the entire desert.

The wobble that makes it rain

What turned the Sahara green was not a local accident but celestial mechanics. The Earth wobbles on its axis like a slowing spinning top, a cycle called precession that comes round roughly every 20,000 years. When the wobble aligns Northern Hemisphere summer with the Earth's closest approach to the Sun, summer sunlight over North Africa intensifies, the land heats harder, and the West African monsoon is dragged hundreds of kilometres further north than it reaches today. During the most recent alignment — the African Humid Period, from roughly 11,000 to 5,000 years ago — monsoon rains watered nearly the whole Sahara. Grasslands, acacia woodland, marshes and huge lakes spread across it, and vegetation amplified the change: plants recycle moisture and darken the land surface, pulling in yet more rain. Nor was this the first time. Ocean sediment cores off Africa record dust alternating with river mud in rhythmic layers, evidence that the Sahara has flipped between desert and savannah dozens of times over millions of years, keeping time with the orbital beat.

The humid period's end, around 5,000 years ago, remains a live argument: some records suggest the rains failed abruptly within centuries, others show a ragged, region-by-region retreat. Either way the consequences were immense. Herding peoples abandoned the drying interior and converged on the one reliable waterway left — the Nile — just as Egyptian civilisation was coalescing; many scholars see Saharan refugees, with their cattle cults and star lore, among its founders. Earlier green phases mattered even more: geneticists and palaeoanthropologists argue that recurring wet corridors across the desert — the so-called Sahara pump — periodically opened the road by which early humans walked out of Africa. At Nabta Playa in southern Egypt, cattle herders had already erected a small stone circle often described as one of the world's oldest astronomically aligned monuments, centuries before work began at Stonehenge.

The lake that feeds the Amazon

The green Sahara still shapes the planet. In northern Chad, the Bodélé Depression — once the deepest floor of Mega-Chad — is caked with diatomite, the powdery silica remains of microscopic lake algae. Winter winds funnel across it and lift enormous plumes of this fossil lake-bed into the sky; the Bodélé is the single dustiest place on Earth. Carried west across the Atlantic, tens of millions of tonnes of Saharan dust fall each year on South America, delivering phosphorus and iron that help fertilise the Amazon rainforest. The bed of a vanished African lake, in other words, feeds the largest forest on Earth — a dead ecosystem subsidising a living one across an ocean.

The orbital wobble has not stopped. On its schedule the monsoon should eventually march north again, and climate modellers expect a green Sahara to return on a timescale of thousands of years, though humanity's own alterations to the climate make the details harder to call. The swimmers on Almásy's cave wall are not a fantasy; they are a memory — and, on a long enough clock, perhaps a forecast.
